Water Saving by combining Rain Collection Barrels and Gravity Micro-Drip
The best water savings in irrigation is achieved by matching the water discharge rate to the plant uptake rate. Drain below the root zone is therefore prevented and the water/air balance in the soil is better for the plant. This method was developed in Israel and called “Micro-Drip Irrigation” and “Gravity Drip Irrigation”. It enables a discharge as low as one glass of water (250CC) per hour.
Former two articles by Racheli described the development of the Micro-drip method and the evolution of the technology. Today, water saving is not just a “green” fashion, but a real worldwide need. It is therefore proposed that the agricultural technology of modern irrigation will be implemented in gardening. For home and garden improvements, the best way is to combine the Micro-Drip with Rain Collection barrel.
The Gravity Micro-Drip Irrigation kit can be connected directly to a rain collection barrel and the water flows by itself (no pump is needed) and distributed through the drippers. All needed is a ordinary 16mm or 20mm PE tube that is connected to the barrel (via outlet valve) and extends along your garden. Simple labyrinth type drippers named “Self Forming” drippers are inserted directly (like button drippers) into the tube at any spacing required by the user. The SF drippers can be cleaned by simple manual operationwhen clogged, but Open Gravity Filter is recommended (to be placed inside the barrel).
