Barrel twist rate for a 223 Rem?
I’m looking at a Tikka T3 Varmint in .223 Rem… there are two different ones available, one with a 8″ twist rate and another with a 12″.
What difference would the barrel twist rate make in this case?
The 1:12″ twist is for use with lighter varminting bullets, weighing 40 to 50 grains. Heavier bullets may not be properly stabilized by this slower twist rate and would fly erratically.
The 1:8″ twist rate is for use with a range of bullets weighing 55 to 80+ grains.
If you used the 40 to 50 grain varminting bullets in a fast twist rate such as 1:8″ or 1:7″, they would be over-stabilized and may literally spin themselves apart in mid-air after being fired. The bullet construction isn’t designed to handle the stress of the twist rate.
