History
Founder
Gordon and Carole Segal opened the first box and store a barrel on December 7, 1962, at age 23. The 1,700 square feet of space in a former elevator factory was located on Wells Street in the bohemian, so the old Chicago, Illinois. The inspiration was their honeymoon in Europe, where Segal was interested to provide aesthetic yet functional products for young couples starting out. Surprised to see that Europe had a lot of beautiful and durable products to reasonable prices, they are inspired to create their own store in the United States.
The first store opened in response to a flourishing trade World fixtures due to the early 1960 round of negotiations on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The Segals searched the small European companies that were not represented in America and negotiated direct purchases from these factories that could be sold to the consumer while avoiding a wholesaler's markup. To date, the majority of Crate & Barrel products are directly imported from Europe, if the glass Thai, Mexican and Indian textiles can also be found in their stores.
The Segals derivatives the company name by the materials that they originally used to display items in their store in Chicago. The Segals were originally will call their company "Barrel and Crate", but a friend suggested that they reverse the order of words. [Citation needed] They turned on boxes and the barrels that the merchandise entered, leaving the wood excelsior vomit, and stacked the china and glass. This helped emphasize their strongest point of sale, that their products were imported.
Growth
In 1968, Segal opened a second store in the Plaza del Lago shopping center in suburban Wilmette, Ill., and third in Oak Brook, Illinois in 1971. Its first store outside the Chicago area opened in Boston in 1977.
In 1985, the chain had grown to 17 stores and has continued to grow. In March 1995, he opened his first shop New York (the location 58th) in Manhattan. After selling a majority stake in the company mail German group Otto, in 1998, the company had funding to increase its rate of expansion. In 2002, it had about 100 sites and over 135 sites by end 2004.
Today there are over 170 stores in the United States.
International expansion
In September 2008, Crate and Barrel opened its first establishment outside the United States, at Yorkdale Mall in Toronto, Canada. A new two-story 35,000-square-foot (3,300 m2) of construction, similar to other newly opened stores in the United States was built. Future international expansion into Canada and possibly other countries have already planned. A second store in Canada, Calgary, opened in October 2009.
In the fall of 2009, the company provides to open two stores in Dubai in 2010 by a franchise agreement with Al Tayer Group.
Management
Barbara Turf, first hired In 1968, Gordon Segal took over as CEO of the company in May 2008. In November 2008, it was reported that sales of last year for the channel were $ 1.3 billion.
Products
Crate and Barrel offers a variety of "high end" items household furniture and related merchandise. They are displayed in the "vignette" style, where items are grouped as they might appear at home. The company was an innovator of this style, which has since become more widely used.
Sister stores
Crate & Barrel has two sister stores. CB2 is a division of home furnishings geared towards young adults, established in 2000.
