Save money and Water Use rain barrels to water your garden
Green is the new color. Today it's all about conserving energy and saving the planet for future generations, as it should be. One way you can do your part is to get a rain barrel for watering your garden. Some local utility companies even sell them with a tap and everything else. If you live in a drought this area could be a possible solution to your problem of watering.
Usually, before a drought, you get weeks of heavy rains. It would be a good time to start setting up a rain barrel, or if you have a large garden barrels more rain area. This saves money on your water bill and, doing your part to save the earth and become "green."
If you do not want to buy a rain barrel that you can make one yourself. Large plastic bins, its great rain barrels or you can hit Home Depot or Lowes and purchase of 55 gallon plastic drums. They are great if you do buy make sure you have a large vehicle to transport them. You will also need a screen to the top to filter out any debris that might fall off your roof into the barrel.
Now you must decide where to place your barrels. Probably you want to place them in a corner of your home. Go outside when it rains and see where the rain falls on your roof. You'll find that it usually pays off in a corner and this would be the best place to put the barrel. But you can also put a barrel where you never see rain high on the roof. You can also install additional gutters and direct the right gutter into the barrel. This is the most effective and rapid to get water in your barrels.
If you find a barrel fills up quickly, you may want their tandem. This means that when a barrel filled you communicate in a tube so that water flows into the empty barrel. If you have a large garden and you have a very good down pour you can connect a large number of rain barrels together and have your own conga line going on with many rolls in a row. This way you will always rainwater available to use on your garden.
Using rain barrels is not a new idea, but remember the saying, "everything old is new again? "Well, this is certainly the case here. You must look with fresh eyes, and I'm sure you can see the benefits of having one or more rain barrels to help you conserve water and save money and watering your garden lush.
