what makes a pistol’s slide lock back after firing the last round in a magazine?
I understand when firing a pistol when a bullet is shot the force of the recoil makes slide go back ejecting an empty shell and then goes forward and chambers a new bullet. How does the pistol just automatically lock back when the last round is fired and only do it on the last round? Also what about rifles like the AR-15 when the last round is fired in the magazine bolt locks back and can be released by a button on the side how does it know to automatically lock back on the last round?
when there are no rounds in the mag the mag follower is allowed to travel all the way to the top flanges of the mag ,there is a small toggle inside the wheapons frame the mag follower pushes up on this and locks the bolt open
