Where is the best place to keep a home defense weapon?
Where should my weapon be located in case someone breaks into the home? To be more specific this is a home with no children and the weapon is a pistol grip 12 gauge. I have been keeping it under my bed but am considering putting it on the little keyboard shelf of my computer desk that slides in and out where it would be hidden and not likely searched if the invader gained the upper hand.
This is hard to answer without looking at your home.
Are you in an apartment with neighbors next door through thin walls? Are other people there with you and are they prepared to use the gun or can they be trusted to leave it alone?
Do you have some sort of alarm which would alert you when someone enters and gives you time to be prepared without the intruder knowing?
Where are the choke points where you might challenge a home invader?
You addressed a serious concern. With no children in the house now, are you sure that there will be none in the future or do you have a plan if there are? Gun safe, lockable closet…
I would think that within fairly easy reach, but out of sight is generally best, but your thinking about not being checked is not realistic. Everyone knows that guns are common and commonly kept close at hand, but out of sight. Have a method for having it in hand when needed or rely upon some other security plan. Just out of sight will arm the bad guy. The dog mentioned above might well help with this concern.
Train with your gun and think about your plans. Shooting someone is not an easy thing and should not be done or planned lightly. Figure out where you can challenge; see and not regret later. Those pellets cannot be retrieved once fired.
