Many guitar players have cleaning techniques that are unique to them but here are a few tips for how you can clean your guitar.

Guitar Strings

When your guitar strings are clean they sound clearer and more coherent. Clean strings also makes your guitar strings last for a longer amount of time and cleaner strings also prevent the frets and fretboard from becoming dirty.

The way to clean your strings and have them in good condition is by running a lint-free cloth under and over them. For better results, rub your guitar strings with a slightly moistened cloth containing a little bit of alcohol or a special string cleaner.

When using the special string cleaner or the alcohol on the cloth, be careful that you do not spill it on the guitar as it can damage the finish.

Fretboard

To clean the fretboard, run a lint-free cloth underneath the strings. Some people use a toothbrush for cleaning the nut and the edges of the frets. If you have an unvarnished fretboard, you should use a special cleaner of some sort. Just look out for a product that says something like fingering board oil.

Some guitarists who have an unvarnished fretboard use peanut and olive cooking oils. However, this can potentially make your fretboard greasy and slippy. Never use oils on a fretboard that is varnished. This will not work out to well for the guitar.

Guitar Body

When cleaning the body of the guitar, you have to take into account the type of finish on the guitar. For a guitar body that is varnished, sometimes a slightly moist cloth will be sufficient. You can also avail of a special guitar cleaner or guitar polish.

With these cleaning products you must be careful about the oil you choose. Make sure that the oil you select is meant for the type of guitar finish you have on your guitar. Guitar finishes for the guitar body can also include oil and wax finishes.

Before you choose the cleaner for your guitar body, make sure you read the instructions first to make sure the oil is suitable for your guitar. Just be mindful that you do not use anything that is rough and scratchy.

If you are unsure about the types of finishes that are on your guitar, you may want to take a visit to a guitar shop to have the person inspect the guitar personally so you can be given accurate advice on what methods and cleaning agents you should use on your guitar.
