Which is better in paintball for a Tippmann A5, an expansion chamber or a remote line with a regulator?
I’m trying to do my homework on what next to buy. I like the idea of a remote line, but I don’t quite understand what’s so crucial about an expansion chamber or a regulator… etc. I would absolutely love it if someone who actually understands the physics (or whatever) of paintball guns to explain to me what they do and if I need them or not. I do plan on installing a response trigger eventually, if this makes any difference. I will not be switching to Nitro/HPA. Any links to other explanations I will look into! Co2 tank refills are actually in the liquid form of co2. The liquid constantly converts to the gas form of co2 that your gun uses. But it doesn’t always convert fast enough.
Expansion chambers are really basic – they are just hollow tubes that allow the liquid co2 to convert into gas, in the event that any of that liquid gets sucked out of the tank and into the gun. Some expansion chambers get more elaborate, having separate sub-chambers within them, but they all do the exact same thing and none are better than the others.
If you get a remote line, you don’t need an expansion chamber, as the line itself serves the same purpose (more time for liquid to convert to gas).
Regulators do exactly what their name implies – regulate! They control the flow of gas (or air, if you use hpa) so there’s always the exact amount of gas entering the gun to operate the internals and propel the paintball. Aids in conserving gas and in preventing pressure/velocity spikes. There’s only a few regulators that work well with co2, though, the most famous being the Palmer’s Stabilizer (and probably the best for Tippmanns, as Palmer has various versions available to fit all mounting situations).
If you’ve got the money for a regulator, i recommend it. But it’s not necessary. Your main goal in this situation is preventing liquid co2 from leaving the tank, since that’s what causes most of the problems associated with co2. Remote line does the trick. If you don’t run a remote line, i suggest getting the co2 tank anti-siphoned, as it’s cheaper than getting an expansion chamber, and isn’t a visible and bulky part, since it’s just a curved brass tube that is installed inside the tank itself, and acts like a snorkel for the gas to come through but not the liquid. But do NOT get the tank anti-siphoned if you use a remote line because then the brass tube acts like a drinking straw instead.
