How do they determine how many extra parts to make for a new car.?
OK when they say we’re gonna build 400,000 2007 Mazda 3’s, Do they build an extra 400,000 set of parts like trannies and engines. How do they predict how many water pumps they will need.
Do they continue making parts after the year is over?
They don’t build a complete extra car and put it in parts. The engineers have estimated how long it will be before each part fails and how long each vehicle will actually stay on the road. They then order up enough extra bits to cover failure during warranty. Accident repairs during the production year are covered by extra orders placed at the time. By the end of warranty, other manufacturers are making replacement parts. Most of the components are the same from year to year with possibly cosmetic changes.
