Sn –> Sn3+ + 3e-
Sn –> Sn4+ + 4e-
Tin does not ordinarily exhibit a +1 oxidation state. These represent the reactions that produce tin with it two common oxidation numbers, but keep in mind that tin is NOT an ion in these compounds. The bonds between Sn and Cl are more covalent than ionic. SnCl4 is a liquid at room temp.
