Protect Your Fuel With Diesel and Petrol Dyes
With the price of fuel increasing frequently within today’s society, recent reports have shown that fuel has become one of the largest targets for many fraudsters and thieves. In its smallest cases, fuel theft is mainly affecting employers who hold stocks of fuel on the premises, with regular losses occurring as a result of theft from their employees. In fact, fuel theft from employers has grown to such a scale, that increases have been noted every single year within the EU. However, on a larger and more serious scale, cheaper forms of fuel are being illegally used by motorists. Reports have shown that red diesel, for example is becoming frequently found within motor vehicles in the UK. This is a great cause for concern as this form of fuel is intended for use in off-guard agricultural vehicles and is valued at around 33% of the price of regular fuels as a result of a lower government tax rate. It is the red dye which is added before the fuels distribution which is helping it to be identified next to other fuels, and is also helping to identify those who are guilty of stealing it.
The use of dye within fuels has become increasingly common throughout the world over the past few years for a wide range of uses. For example, aviation fuels are marked with a dye which helps to ensure that aircrafts are fuelled with the correct fuel in order to avoid accidents. Petrol (or gasoline) and diesel have recently been dyed in order to help prevent fraud and to aid as evidence against those who are guilty of fuel theft. However, in order for this form of fuel protection to be effective, certain measures must be put into place so that the dyes which are added into fuels can be effectively detected. This measure is more so important when dyed fuels have been illegally treated in an attempt to remove the dyes so that the fuel in question can be sold in place of expensive fuels to make a profit. In situations where this happens, the concentration of dyes in the fuel will be lower.
There are a number of methods on record which are used to analyse fuel dyes, in particular HPLC with detection by mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectroscopy and diode array detection. An advanced version of this detection has also been designed within Brazil and Germany, which are two of the location where fuel dying was originally established.
There are a range of businesses worldwide that specialise in providing businesses with dyes and markers which help to identify fuel in an attempt to prevent fuel theft.
