How to Selecting Hair with Masking and Channels Tools in Photoshop
There are many ways in Photoshop to select an object image. Here I’ll share a hair selection techniques using Masking and Channel Tool.
First open the file to be edited. Here I use a photo of a girl and background scenery, I’ll try for selecting the image girl for later merged with the image background scenery.
After that create a new layer fill channel mixer. Then check the Monochrome option, Manage Channels so it would appear a clear contrast between the background with people.
Then create a new fill layer channel mixer back and check the Monochrome option, but here we set the reverse of the above, where we focus on the contrast of the hair that will be selected.
Then selection all the way click on Select -> All (Ctrl + A), After that copy by clicking on Edit -> Copy Merged (Shift + Ctrl + C), do not forget to Copy Merged not Copy. Then Go to the Channels Options -> Create a New Channels and Paste (Ctrl + V) on the new channels that we make.
Back to the Layers, select Channel Mixer 1, then Copy Merged (Shift + Ctrl + C) again and Create New Channels on the Channel again and Paste it. Here we have a new Channel Alpha 1 and Alpha 2. Then, still in Alpha 2, click Image -> Adjustments -> Levels (Ctrl + L), set up so that contrast between black and white is becoming increasingly clear.
Switch to Channel Alpha 1, do the same to set the contrast, to this Channel Input Levels on the choice of the far left or Black should not be too big because it feared the hair detail will be lost. If still needed use the Dodge tool or the Burn tool to contrast and eliminate both black and white colors that are not needed.
To further clarify the part of the body, here I will be selecting separate parts of his body with Pen tool for more precision. Then right click and click Make Selection, for the Feather Radius impressed me the contents of 0.5 for more smooth and then click OK.
Then Go to Channels and click on Save selection as channel, so it will appear Alpha 3 as a new channel.Then select the Alpha channel 2, click Image -> Adjustments -> Invert (Ctrl + I)
Selection Channel Alpha 3 Now by press Ctrl + Click on the Channel Alpha 3,then add the selection to the Channel Alpha 2 and Alpha 1 by press Shift + Ctrl + Click on the Alpha 2 and Alpha 1 sequence. Now move on the Layers option and choose an image that is being selected, and then click on the Add layer mask.
To better combining the girl and the background color, here I use Match Color.
First Right click on the Mask and click Apply Layer Mask , then click on Image -> Adjustments -> Match Color.
Here I just Set the Fade in number 50, check Neutralize, Do not forget to select the Source (Select a file name that you use) and select Layer images of people who will be harmonized color.
