1994 Mustang GT Serpentine belt question.?
I have a 94 gt, with the 5.0 engine. How much play should be in the belt? I have removed the smog pump, and replaced the stock belt with a 90 inch belt. The belt squeeks something awful upon start up, and at idle when the heat and lights are on. It sounds like it is slipping around the altenator, and the amp gauge confirms this. I had an 89.5 on before and it seemed way to tight and also squeeked. 90.5 is way to loose! The 90in worked for about a week and a half before squeeking. Is it too loose or to tight? is my tensioner bad? It seems to be working fine..
Eric B.. It actually increased the amount of belt going around the alt. it only slips at start up, or between gear changes with lights or heat on.
Went back to 89.5 inch belt with a new idle arm pully, old one was getting burned by the loose belt and didn’t spin freely,; problem solved, thanks.
The best way to check for proper belt length is to check the marks on the “shoulder” portion of the tensioner. The single mark on the one side should line up between the two marks on the other side.

If this checks OK and your pulleys are nice and clean, you probably have a weak spring in the tensioner, although you should also check for free rotation of the pulleys with the belt off too. The Alternator especially should spin quite freely.
I see from your belt diagram that removing the smog pump would increase the belt contact area with the Alternator, but lessen it with the Water pump. Check to see if the back (smooth) side of the belt is getting glazed (shiny).
If so, check the tensioner pulley and water pump for free rotation. These are the two items that run off the back side of the belt. The tensioner pulley should spin quite freely, a little more effort to turn the water pump.
But given the circumstances of when it squeals, I’d say it’s either too long of a belt, or a weak tensioner spring. Either of those will have the effect of the belt being too loose.
