Are Dogs Really A Good Swimmer?

Anytime we venture out on the water, we ensure that our children are wearing a life vest, and we also make sure that we have them close at hand. Many people forget to think of their dog when enjoying time on a lake or ocean. Most dogs are great swimmers, but they too can quickly tire or succumb to injury. If taking your dog on your boating adventures is something you commonly do, you should do your buddy a favor and make sure he is fitted with a proper life vest also.

There are a lot of doggy life jackets on the market. Some are extremely durable and will last for many years if not a lifetime and others are cheaper, meant for less frequent use. Consider your situation, the type of boating you do, the type of do, the dog’s activities on the water and the dogs size. A dog that will spend a lot of time in the water swimming will need a vest designed for that. Your poodle that sits calmly on deck doesn’t. Make sure the vest fits the dog snugly but doesn’t restrict its movement.

Pet stores carry a few models of dog life vests, but the best and cheapest source is online. If you are unsure of the size you need, most online sites can help. If in doubt, do a little research and you’ll probably find a rough sizing chart. Fit does not have to be perfect as long as it won’t come off or restrict the dog.

Even the best swimming dogs can drown. Down let a fun boating trip end sadly with the senseless death of your dog. Get him the proper safety gear and avoid the tragedy with ease.
